Itsalmost hard to believe in this day and age of movie and game tie-ins,but other than a couple of handheld games, the last Pirates of theCaribbean movie didnt have a companion game on consoles. DisneyInteractive Studios is making up for lost time with Pirates of theCaribbean: At Worlds End, which features plotlines from both thesecond and third Pirates movies. While the game does a solid job ofcapturing the look and humor of the movies, it fails to emulate thefilms action sequences very well. The combat is extremely simple, andyoull grow tired of mashing on the attack button well before you reachthe end of the game. The first half of the game follows theevents of Dead Mans Chest, specifically Captain Jack Sparrows attemptto recover the heart of Davy Jones to avoid becoming a member of hiscrew, and it culminates with Jacks encounter with the Kraken. Thesecond portion of the game sees Sparrow and his not-so-merry band ofmisfits joining together to take on Lord Beckett and retrieve the heartof Davy Jones once and for all. Even if youve seen the second film, the story is quite difficult to follow since its told by way of short, disjointed cutscenes. Youll recognize several scenarios and locationsfrom the movies, but there are many things youll do that arent in themovies.
Most of your time in At Worlds End is spent as JackSparrow, though youll also get to play as Elizabeth, Will, and a fewother characters along the way. Youll sword fight your way fromTortuga to Singapore, which may sound exciting, but its really not.You have both light and heavy attacks, as well as a close attack, andyou can perform combos by stringing the attacks together. You have thesame attacks on the Wii, but theyre performed by waving the Wii Remoteup and down or left and right. Note to developers: The Wii Remotedoesnt make a good sword--its imprecise, tiring, and, well, kind ofdumb. Enemies literally appear out of thin air and put up littleresistance as you pound the attack buttons or wave your arms like amadman. You earn new combos as you progress, but they dont look much(if any) different than the other combos; theyre no more effective, and because the game does a poor job of registering movement, theyrenearly impossible to pull off on the Wii. Theres also a block button, but its of little use because generally most of your damage will comefrom enemies who attack you from behind when youre dealing with a foein front of you. If you turn and confront the person stabbing you inthe back, youll end up getting plunked by the guy you were originallydealing with. There are a handful of weapons, such as guns, grenades, and knives, which are scattered throughout for you to use.Unfortunately, theyre not very useful. The grenades work OK, but gunsand knives are particularly difficult to aim. If you mix up yourattacks, you can raise your notoriety. The game makes a big deal aboutnotoriety, but its utterly pointless.
